Re: James Mather
Hi Dizzi,
Thanks for all that. I use the LancsOPC site all the time and have found lots of my information on this family from it. However, they don't seem to have a marriage for James MATHER and an Ann. Nor for an Ellen born in either Hindley or Darwen.
As far as Ellen is concerned, some of the censuses give her birthplace as Darwen others say Hindley. However, the baptism below at Chowbent is a possible one for her. Certainly the Billinge one to Thomas and Ann is not her as I have found later censuses for that family and they just don't match in any way.
The 1841 census rounded down ages so saying that Ann was 40 could mean she was anywhere between 45 and 40, which makes a 1799 birth quite feasible.
Going to Ellen's marriage - I think there must have been some kind of error that ended with James not being listed as deceased. When Ellen's sister Ann married in 1846 she stated James was deceased. Sister Sarah married in the same year and said the same. Mary married in 1842 and said the same. And Elizabeth married in 1850 and also said her father James was dead. That's what makes me think Ellen's details could be wrong.
I have no problem at all with all the children of Ann and James, it's just that I would love to find Ann's maiden name.
Thanks again for your help.
Joan
