Eric That is so good and I hope you find him..I have Ancestry and cant find him in those Yorkshire records..I could have missed him but still no luck.. Let us know if you find him..
I even looked to see if he was born before his parents married and registered under the name of McQuillan..still no luck..

I spoke too soon! Although the note from Ancestry used the full name (Ernest McQuillan Hargraves), the people they had found were merely Ernest Hargraves and with the 'wrong' parents. Sorry to have posted prematurely. Back to the drawing board.

Dizzi: Your list including these name - Father's name: Frances McQuillan, Mother's name: Mary Ann McQuillan ..... Household Members: Frances McQuillan 32, Mary Ann McQuillan 29, Mary A McQuillan 8, Frances McQuillan 7 - is very interesting because Francis and Mary are my great grandparents' names. That looks interesting Dizzy I have found a marriage for

Mary McQuillan in Dec.1875 to either Thomas Quayle or John Lowther in Whitehaven 10b 1065..

Well what I have found so far is

Francis Mcquillan to either a mary Ann Nixon or a Mary Ann Bell..

1861 census

Mary Ann Mcquwillan age 21 Sunderland Durham

1871 census
Francis and Mary are there with their 2 children
Mary Ann age 8(1862)
Frances age 7 (1864) both born Sunderland Durham

1881 census

I can only find Mary Ann Mcquillan the daughter working as a servant

1891 and 1901 census
Francis Mcquillan is a widow and living in a Common boarding house Kingston Upon Hull ,,Yorkshire
In the 1891 census he is a mariner so he coould have been at sea in the 1881 census

Found a death for Mary Ann Mcquillan Dec. 1871 Sunderland 10a 425

Cant find Francis in the 1881 census

Now if Ernest was born in 188o or there abouts I recon he was illegitimate and the mother had the surname of Hargraves and Francis was the father ..So that is why he had the 2 surnames which I feel was not the way he was actually registered ..probably only with the Hargraves name..and the rest was added later by him or his parents..

Looking at births there are 3 Hargraves born around that time

Dec 1879 9d..319.. George Robert born Drifield

Sept 1879 9d 229 Albert born Hull

John William born Hull Dec 1879 9d 273

Any one of these could have been Ernest.. who probably changed his name from something else which he didnt like..

(I have a distant grandmother who was christened Elizabeth but changed it to Amelia and died as Amelia )
