Just had an Ahhh moment earlier in the evening and tried to find out more about the Pringle of Scotland luxury clothing manufacturer.

Got a very small bio and history but a bit of sleuthing revealed that a Robert Pringle started the clothing manufacturing - hosiery - in 1815
at Hawick

And where was James Pringle - stocking maker - living when he was caught stealing??? Hawick!

A small piece of info but interesting.

Have also just found a tantalising snipet on google books from The Scottish hosiery and knitwear industry, 1680-1980
that Robert Pringle might have had a brother called John

Ok - next bit of tantalising information:

http://www.calmview.eu/HUBCAT/CalmView/ ... 2f86&pos=3

In 1794 16 year old John Pringle, son of Walter Pringle and Betty Heiton was taken on as apprentice by William Beck, Hawick Master Hosier. In 1815 he formed a partnership with his half brother Robert, Peter Wilson and John Waldie, in a firm known as Waldie, Pringle and Wilson, established at Whisky House Mill in Slitrig Crescent.

In 1819 the partnership acquired new premises at Cross Wynd, where Robert Pringle emerged as head of the firm. He was one of the first manufacturers to introduce the new broad frames used to make knitted underclothing for both men and women. Thus began a new phase in the Hawick textile industry from hosiery (stockings) to undergarments.

Robert Pringle took a prominent part in the local affairs of his home town, as a councillor, police commissioner, member of the parochial board and kirk session and active Liberal supporter. In 1842 his son Walter Pringle joined the family business.

My thinking goes like this: if this John Pringle was involved in the stocking weaving / hoisery side of the business, then maybe he also taught his legitimate / illegitimate son the same business and gave him a chance. Convict James has stocking maker / weaver as his occupation. maybe also, his good connections to Robert Pringle were able to get him clear of the first two convictions. Lots of maybes

I think I have a black sheep, JA

The birthplace for James, Kelso, comes from the book Lanyon Saga by the way, so is completely unverified.

Vonny found this in the Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan: from the distrcit to the ACT 1820 to 1930. Nothing new. The information was submitted by people after a call for contributions. Published 2001. By P Proctor.

There was a Vallance family of three brothers who came out in 1841 - Hugh, Peter and George, born Paisley Sct. They lived around Murrumbatman and are buried in Yass. One had property at Yass also. No sign of a John.

Have the certifcates arrived yet? :D

Thank you JA :bk
I wonder if that was submitted by Diane because it misses out Elizabeth (Tess) my GGG.
Come to think of it - Diane did not have Tess or William so it might be someone else.

I will ask her.

No certs   I'm going to email tomorrow and ask.
