Re: William Adams b. abt 1868 Gloucestershire
Q, I remember that there were coal mines around Gloucester as when I was doing A level geography at Bishop Fox's School Tainton we went to a cosl mine near there - I went down the pit and they had a roof fall and we were trapped for a couple of hours in a tunnel you could not stand up in - the miners shared thier cold tea with us and teased us that the fall was because there were girls down the mine - me and my fear of confined spaces gritted teeth and laughed alot with the miners. Looking back it certainly gave me a taste of what it was like for my Great Grndfather Sam Dean who worked down the mines in Barnsley/Jump areas of Yorkshire.
I agree that it seems a long way from being a telegraphist. Might search on that while you sort out kate's family.

JA, that must have been dreadful. I don't think I would have been
able to go down the mine in the first place. My uncle was a coal miner
in Dewsbury, before they had good equipment. In the days when they crawled on their bellies
with a pick and shovel. He gave it up eventually and went to work in a mill, but when he died,
after the autopsy my aunt was told that his lungs were just solid black, No compensation
in those days.
We don't value these occupations enough do we. Like a friend of us used to say, "We don't
stand at the pit head and applaud the miners after their shift, why should we applaud
entertainers when they have finished."
btw, were there any ship canals in Gloucester. From what I read coal trimmers had to make
sure that the coal was level in the holds.

Q, I am full of admiration for the coal miners what a job it was and they always seemed so stoic. I will look at Gloucester to see when/if it exported coal, It was pretty low grade so could have been used locally. Will keep at Adams. LM is there with us doing both Adams and kate

Mary or JA, I am unable to view the original copy of the
1901 census for Kate Adams on Ancestry. Is it possible
for one of you to get a copy for me. Thanks

Thanks JA. Yes I could open them. I am no wiser. And no, I haven't
had much time for FH. A friedn came this morning when I was tidying
my store room. I had pulled everything out. So I had to sort that out
after lunch. It was nice though to see my friend.

Re: William Adams b. abt 1868 Gloucestershire
Q I have sent two GR emails, one about Kate Cunningham 1910 Sheffield, and the other about William Adams born 1868 in Redcliff - I don't hold out much hope for them as when I searched on Martha Marsden and Frederick Adams nothing came up - but worth a try. Nothing on Kate Talford

Re: William Adams b. abt 1868 Gloucestershire
After a lot of searching this is what I have found on Martha, Kates mother
Martha mother of Kate
I have 99% established that Martha was born in 1837, in Sheffield Yorkshire.
I worked backwards starting with her death in 1894. Martha had 3 marriages.
In 1855 she married Bernard Cunningham and had I son, Bernard Cunningham born In 1858
In 1873she married Isaac Talford, Kate’s father . Isaac died in 1876
In 1890 she married George Whiteley.
In the census’s from 1851 to 1891 all seem to match up.
In the 1861 census there is mention of her mother Sarah Marsden living with her
In 1851 I found Martha with her widowed mother.
Also there is a sister Sarah who is 17, 2 years older than Martha.
And a son Joseph Berry aged 32. And a lodger Henry Hyde.
From this is would seem that Sarah, Martha’s mother had been married to a Mr Berry.
I have been unable to find a marriage to either Berry or Marsden.
Looking for the 1841 census became much harder.
I had established that Sarah was born in 1796.
I tried looking for Joseph berry in 1841 as a last resort, and the only one I found was
Sarah Lier approx YOB 1796 Sheffield
Sarah Lier “ “ 1834 Sheffield
Martha Lier “ “ 1836 Sheffield
Joseph Burry “ “ 1821 Sheffield
William Burry “ “ 1826 Sheffield.
Living in Deep Pit Road, Sheffield
In 1851 she is now called Marsden. And comes from Birmingham Warwickshire.
I now do not know if Martha is Marsden or Leir
To throw up another puzzle, While looking at the 1851 census I found the following
Edward Marsden 31
Sarah Marsden 25
Mary A Marsden 6
William Marsden 4
Frederick Marsden 2
Joseph Berry 30
Just a coincidence, but strange that Joseph Berry turned up, and the age is almost correct.
I have spent days just looking through B M D’s but this is the best I can do.. And I still don’t know who Martha really is.

Q, I cannot remember which marriage certificate you have got - is it Kate's? Is that the one which says her father is Issac Talford? If it is then the marraige certificate of her mother to Isaac should have the name of marth's father? Or I am losing the plot again. How frustrating for you. Or maybe we need the first marriage certificate to Cunningham?
