Hi,

This is how I see Martha's Parentage

1841 Census Sheffield
William Marsden 35 b. c 1806
Hannah Marsden 35 b c 1806
George Marsden 15 b c 1826
Robert Marsden 12 b c 1829
Oline? Marsden 8 b c 1833 (Girl)
MARTHAMarsden 4 b c 1837
Hannah Marsden 3 b c 1839

1841 census Sheffield
Sarah Berry 50 b c 1791
Joseph Berry 25 b c 1816
Reuben Berry 20 b c 1921
Alice Berry 15 b c 1826
Oates Berry 14 b c 1827

1851
census Sheffield
Sarah Marsden Head 1795
Sarah Marsden Dau 1834
MARTHA Marsden Dau b 1836
Joseph Berry son 1819
Henry Hyde Lodger 1830

1861 Census Sheffield
Sarah Marsden Mother in Law 66 b 1795
Bernard Cunningham 31
MARTHA Cunningham 25 b 1836
Bernard Cunningham 2

I think that MARTHA'S parents were probably William and Hannah Marsden,
and Sarah was not actualy her mother, but her step mother. I think that
sometimes they were called Mothers in law back then. Had Sarah been her mother then she would
have been on Sarah's census in 1841.
I do think that Sarah may have married Martha's father, but I am not sure about the name
change William or Edward.

Sarah couldn't have married Joseph Whiteley in 1847 as she was on the 1851 census as Marsden .

I think that would end that mystery. Thanks for the help

Its the 2 Marsden men that have me puzzled.
If Martha was born in 1836 and Sarah married Marsden in 1843
then she couldn't have been her mother

There are 6 deaths in Sheffield of William Marsdens between Sept qtr 1846 - again not much help - but does say that the needle is in the haystack but will keep looking. Also looked at parish records for marriages. we will get there yet. Looks like going onto the Yorkshire site and IGI for the next steps. We really need a birth record for Martha -to show parentage. Q when did she die by the way?
