Showing adoption in family tree software

Post by erich »

Hello everyone, I seem to be always asking questions, and I'm hopeful someone can help me with this please.

It seems that one of my grandparents on my mother's side was adopted, and quite possibly both of them. It seems right that I include at least the adopting parents in the tree - not sure if I should follow them back further or not.

But how to show this on standard family tree computer software, for example, on Ancestry's site? I can show the adoption as an event, but I cannot show the adopting parents on the tree unless I omit the birth parents (if I know them - so far 1 out of 4 is all I have!) and show the adopting parents as if they were the birth parents, which could be misleading. I could make two separate trees I suppose.

Does anyone know how this is usually done and any software which copes with it please?

Thanks

I think I can put the information in, but it doesn't show on the tree, only if you open up the person's details.

I don't think there are any family tree programs where you are able to show both adopted and birth parents as a visual tree presentation. The handful of folk I know who are adopted and have chosen to follow both lines all have separate trees for the birth and adopted lines, with notes and links to send viewers in either direction.

Thanks everybody, that was very helpful.
  • I don't have my trees stored on this site. (I didn't even know it could be done.)
  • If I had a decent amount of information on both the adoptive and the natural lines, and I wanted to show them both on one diagram, I think that would be difficult, and I agree that showing two lines would be better. But I have so little ....
  • I didn't know that about Ancestry, which is where my trees are currently stored (until I get software to have it on my own computer - I am thinking of using Ancestry's software for Mac when the new version comes out). So that reference will be useful thanks.
