Any onward info available?

Post by DurhamLady »

If a person arrived in Australia in 1912 is there any information available as to where they were heading once they arrived.

I have a second cousin Harry JOBES who arrived Melbourne in March 1912 then simply seems to have vanished. His brother William's descendants had never heard of Harry so can't help at all. Williams descendants al live in the Sydney NSW area.

Hi Daphne.

Do you know the forenames and mothers maiden name of Harry JOBES
parents.

Do you also know if Harry was married or came with a spouse and any children to Aussie.

There are no surnames on Victorian BDM's showing up for JOBES........but there are JOBE minus the S......showing up on Index's in Melbourne ( Victoria ). It wasnt unusual for surnames to have letters missing on Index's in Aussie, either through mistranscibed or spelling errors

There are children showing up on various index's in Victoria, with father: Harry JOBE

Cheers. Tony ( Melbourne )

Hi Tony.
Harry was in his early 20's when he arrived in Australia born in England approx 1887. He went to Canada in 1910 with his father and younger brother. His mother joined them later His parents died 1911, a sad story and not very nice.
Henry left Canada after his parents deaths, not sure if he went to the UK first but arrived in Victoria State Australia aboard the RUNIC in March 1912. His younger brother William born 1888 returned to England and emigrated with his wife and child in 1927. Wiliam stayed in the Parrametta area until his death.
His parents were Henry JOBES and Mother Sarah Annie Elizabeth née GIPSON.
That's about all I know about Harry so any help would be appriciated.

Hi Daphne. I found the shipping link for Harry coming in to Victoria.
Also noted as JONES. Passenger lists were always written up from Port of departure and not from disembarkation in Australia

Index of Inward Passenger Lists for British, Foreign and New Zealand Ports 1852-1923
Family Name First Name Age Month Year Ship Port Fiche Page
JOBES HARRY MR 26 MAR 1912 RUNIC B 842 006
JONES HARRY MR 26 MAR 1912 RUNIC B 842 006

This Ship "RUNIC" was also calling at Sydney and New Zealand as well as Melbourne.
He is not listed in Deaths or Marriages for the State of N.S.W either.

Wether he stayed here in Melbourne or moved on somewhere else, dosent show up in Victorian BDM's or Directories for this period. Also have checked Victorian and Melbourne Cemeteries, but there are no listings of a Harry/Henry JOBES being buried here.

The surname JOBES dosent register on Victoria Index's from 1900 Births and marriages and up to 1985 Deaths. The closest to this surname was "JOBE"

One death found of a Hy JOBE in Melbourne suburb of Collingwood (below ) but unfortunatley Parents listed as UNKNOWN.
If this chaps death cert was filled out by an unknown informant, then age at death could be wrong.

Surname: JOBE
Given Names: Hy Wm
Father: Unknown
Mother: Unknown UNKNOWN
Death Place: CWOOD ( Collingwood )
Age: 58
Age Code:
Year: 1930
Reg Number: 1071
Event: D

Hi Tony, many thanks for looking all that up. I've a feeling Harry was trying to avoid anyone knowig about his parents and could have changed his name once he arrived in Australia.
Do you know if the Runic travelled from the UK to Australia. I'm trying to piece together Harry and his brother William's time from December 1911 onwards. I know William was in the UK and married there but wondered if Harry would have had time to get from Vancouver in Canada to England then Australia by March 1912.

Brenda, :) no you are not a Jonah, the sons left the criminal act to their father. He murdered their mother and was hung December 1911.
