Mary McMahon

Post by Yvonne from Oz »

Hello researchers,

Would you mind doing some checking for me please?

A distant rellie of Ratty's has made contact again (been years) to query the wife of the original Kilminster,
this is what he says:

I am mightily confused.
On my family tree I have the parents of Mary McMahon (c.1825-1915) as Michael McMahon and Mary Mullins (p173, Gosford Pioneer Register; Central Coast Family Historical Society Inc). The same document lists her as born circa 1824 in Ennis County, Clare, Irl. 'Pioneers of Liverpool', p183 said she arrived on 21.02.1842 aboard 'Nabob'. I see a McMahon family on the ship but not her.

Her death certificate lists her father as Thomas McMahon, butcher and mother as unknown, surname Perry (?). It also lists her as having been born in Limerick Irl.

I have a copy of Mary's death cert, which is where I got my info from. Mary died and was buried in Liverpool in 1915. Her daughter Sarah was the informant.
I usually tend to rely a bit more on daughter's rather than son's when it comes to info!! BUT they obviously just guessed her age or how long she had been in Australia (death cert about 68years, other info puts it 73 years)

Now, her wedding cert states that she was about 19 when she married on 20 July 1844 (he was about 33 or 37years old) so that equates with being born circa 1824. but that means she was around 90 / 91 when she died (death cert says about 77years)

Seeing as he was a convict (life), I find it strange that some parents (Michael and Mary) would let their 19 year old daughter marry such an older man (she didn't appear to be pregnant)
and happily wave her off to the backwoods of Blue Gum Flat, Brisbane Water Gosford (he was a sawyer, jack of all trades). As far as we can tell the first child was born around 1846.

So - have we another convict on our hands???

I can see her talking to her daughter about where she was born so Limerick is a possibility.

Just trying to get my head around this so any comments welcome.

I have found a record for a Mary McMahon coming to
Australia as an assited Immigrant aboard the Nabob.
Arrival 21 Feb 1842.

I think there may be 2 Mary's one who married William
Gates and one who married John Kimmister. Unless she married
twice,But that doesn't seem feasible One marriage was 1844 and one 1845.

The death dates are different the one married to William GAtes was 1906
and the one to kimmister was 1815, this one must be yours, she was burried in
Liverpool
I think its the parents who need sorting.

Thank you Q.

Your first one from Ancestry must be the information that Ratty's rellie has - although he apparently got it from different sources.
It has an extra child (Annie) that I have never seen before!!!
(but just maybe Mary was pregnant with Annie when she got married!!)

Have no idea about the second tree but very strange that the parents names are the same (although not impossible I suppose)
none of the rest of the information fits with anything I have.

Q - the record of her arriving is the one we need. Where is it and can you copy it??
