Mary, sorry about delay, we've had a few things happening and this dropped off my list for a while.

The daughter's name was Constance Shirley Hargraves, she was born in 1927 and thus was 12 when her father Ernest died in 1939 (mother Gertrude died in 1934). I found her in the 1949 electoral roll, aged 22 at Kensington, which is right age and right area of Sydney (eastern suburbs, where they lived before Ernest died). But no more after that, no marriage or death. I looked up all the Constance Shirley's I could find under any possible married name, but too many altogether and none that could be identified as her. So it's a mystery where she went.

No mention in the Ryerson Index that I could find, but thanks for the reference. I still haven't gotten out to the Archives at Kingswood, but I still intend to.

Thanks again.

G'day everyone,

I am still on the trail of Ernest McQuillan Hargraves, just letting you know progress since so many of you have taken an interest.

I have doen some more searching in UK records, and still finding nothing. A person I met on the forum at 'The Genealogist' did a little searching for me too, found no reasonable reference to Ernest or his parents, and came up with this conclusion: "I do not think that your ancestor existed in England using the names given..... I think that Ernest McQuillan Hargraves must have invented his past or else did not come from England and definitely not Lincoln or Lincolnshire."

That set me thinking, and I have gone back to the only Francis Hargrave(s) I have found married to a Mary McQuillan - in Melbourne, not UK. Tony (I think) found me this couple, who died in 1902 & 1909, but there was no Ernest among their children (as shown on her death certificate), so I gave up on them. But if I now have to consider the possibility of a fabricated name and or history, I have to consider whether these could indeed be his parents, but he had been banished from the family by the time Mary died, or else that he knew them as a teenager and used their names as a convenient source for his fabricated parents. (But if the latter, why give his two children the second name of McQuillan?)

This is messing with my mind, for I'm unwilling to entertain such an exotic possibility, especially as there would be no way to prove it. Bt that's the desperate place I have come to. Just letting you know. Thanks for your interest.

I guess we had thought he might have put names together - running from sonething maybe - have you had any luck with his daughter from the second marriage.

I looked again the other day for Ernest on A given the new west Yorkshire records but nothing new came up - will look again.

Take care

What a bummer Eric.. know how you feel..we all have brick walls that we would like to knock down..it took me ages to trace my ggrandfather.. He was born a Crowley and married a Mary.. but she would have been to old to be my ggrandmother and the surname was now Hawley..but some brillian person whilst looking for the Hawley name in a census came up with the Crowley name, thinking they had been misstranscribed..,Their christian names all fitted all except for the surname.. I was just plain lucky to find someone on GR who had the name of one of the Crowley children in his tree, so I contacted him and it turned out to be the same family as we were lucky as the occupation of Coffee House Keeper was in both families. It turned out that he was a Crowley in his first life and when the first Mary died he married another Mary and changed his name to Hawley, but when one of the children of the first marriage married he signed Crowley on the marriage cerificate..so you can see they were very free with names in those days,,

Will go back and see if I can find anything more for you ,,,dont give up....
