James Mather

Hi, this research is for a friend. She is
trying to find the marriage of James Mather to Ann.

Their daughter is Ellen Mather and on her Marriage certificate
her father is listed as James Mather

The Ellen b.Q3 1818 is the right one, I just found her the wrong parents. She died Q3 1896 age 78. This is her marriage:

For a long time my friend thought that Ellens father was called George, and she believes
her mother is called Ann.
Other areas where the family are known to have lived are Wigan and Darwen. Presumabley all in Lancashire.
She has all the details from Ellen down, but not much before. I think the Ann could have been born in
Ireland.
I have found a James and Ann Mather living in Salford, Manchester in 1851 with a niece Caroline Fairhurst 32 and her daughter Eliza Fairhurst 6
The Ann on there was born in Ireland . Not sure about the Fairhurst's

Hello Dizzi,

Thought I'd better continue this myself; no point burdening SuzyQ with it again. Thanks for what you have found. I did know about Ellen's illegitimate children, her sister Ann did the same. However, what you found for 1841 is not the right census. By that time, James had died and I believe he was buried on 23 Feb 1834 at St.Mary the Virgin, Deane by Bolton. This would have been after the birth of their last child, Elizabeth.

My feeling is that the right marriage is this one:

James and Ann Williams 9 July 1816 St.John's, Manchester

But I have no way of finding out without a possible clue from the names of the witnesses, which I don't have.
