Just looked again at 1841 census says Mary Ann was 53, not 58 as I said Dizzi - so she could have only been 16 when married.

Q - that is really interesting. I will have to see if there are any other Marshall Bayley's (besides Marshall Bayley junior.)

Ok - we have a marriage which looks like it is probably them:
12 May 1804 Thomas Bayley, marriage, Mary Ann Patterson St Martin in the Fields :)

then we have children: Richard 1817, Caroline 1819, Mary Ann 1821, Margaret Elizabeth 1822, Marshall 1823, William 1826

That is an awful long time between the marriage and having children! Especially as she didn't seem to have any trouble having them once she started.

George has been mentioned as being an older brother and an older cousin of mine said that Marshall was the youngest of 10 children (part of that is not correct as William obviously came later!) Unless, of course, William died as a baby.

Just checked - George is meant to have been born in 1809, which makes him between 30 - 32 so your census is probably the right family, JA.

of course - there could be two Thomas Bayleys marring Mary Ann Patterson's!! I only have the Sydney Stock Exchanges word to go by!!

Q that earlier marriage you found was interesting - the dates would put Thomas in the right age bracket for marriage, and some of the children's names seem to be carried on in Thomas' children. Is it possible to contact that tree owner?

Do you think it would be worthwhile getting Marshall's birth certificate?

thought - might be better to get his death cert or marriage cert as he married and died in Aust.?

Forget that - i just checked my records - i have access to photocopies of both marriage and death certs - Parents names are blank spaces!!
