Looking for info on my maternal Gt-grandfather

My Gt-grandfather, Michael NOONAN, was born circa 1837 in Limerick, Ireland.

His wife, Mary WELSH, was born in Queens county Ireland circa 1843.
I have no idea when they were married.

Michael was a professional soldier and was posted to several places including Daisa, India.

When my grandmother was born (10th March 1878) he was the gate-keeper at Dublin castle.

In the 1881 census the family is listed as living in Manchester New Road, Failsworth, Lancashire.

The family story is that Michael was decorated by Queen Victoria (I have no idea why). Then story also goes that when he died in 1906 he was given a military funeral.

What I'd like to find is Michael's date of death, where he's burried and, if possible, why he was decorated.
Any help will be VERY appreciated.
Thanks

Added by cornwall180 on 7 Apr 2007
Bridget arrived in Australia on 15th March 1854 as an Assisted Immigrant on board the ship "Rodney" out of Plymouth, England. She was accompanied by her brother William, her cousin Bridget Noonan, and her uncle, Thomas Noonan.

Bridget's father, Michael Noonan and his brother John had been in Australia since 1834, having been sentenced to 7 years' transportation from Clare, Ireland

No, sorry Gwen. Unfortunately all my relatives were goody-two-shoes....I don't have any convicts. I don't think your info is connected to my lot but I'll check it anyway.
Thanks for trying
