Hi guys
Wondering if you can offer any advice on finding the ship my father sailed on. He sailed from Wales to Australia in 1925. He lived and worked in Penarth and my Mum used to say he worked his way here on board a ship. He was only 17 and had been apprenticed to a chronometer maker in Penarth.
I can't find any arrivals for him at this end. Do you know what documentation he would have needed to travel to Oz?
His name was John Parlour born 1.12 1907.
Would be ever so grateful if you could offer any suggestions
Thanks
Annie :P

My great grandfather William Bottriell is found in the 1901 census living in Sutton in Surrey with his wife Ethel and son William Fredrick aged 1.

I have their wedding certificate and it says that William was born in Northamtonshire in 1879, father George - Shoemaker.

I cannot find William in the 1881 or 1891 census can anyone help, I have been stuck on this for ages.

Thanks

Hi Linda. Could this be your William.?

Although William states his father was George on his marriage cert. Is it possible that his father was Henry george and called... George. ( just a thought )

The head of the household here, is a Henry..but also in the Shoe business...among other.

1881 Census Northampton

Henry BOTTERILL Head M Male 33 Duston, Northampton, England Rivetter & Beer Seller (Shoe)
Elizabeth BOTTERILL Wife M Female 35 Northampton, England Landlady (Lodging H Keeper)
Ellen BOTTERILL Daur Female 7 Northampton, England
William BOTTERILL Son Male 2 Northampton, England

Dwelling 51 Bearward St Old True Blue
Census Place Northampton St Sepulchre, Northampton, England
Family History Library Film 1341373
Public Records Office Reference RG11
Piece / Folio 1545 / 30
Page Number 16

ps. With a surname like Bottriell...its quite possible it has many spelling variations.

Oh thanks Tone, I never thought about looking for the father with a different name, that could well be him, I will look into that. I have ordered four different birth certificates for William but they were all wrong.

Thanks again really appreciate it

Hi Guys,

Here's my brick wall, Charles Maynard, the Elusive man.

Charles Maynard B ? 1804c says Leigh, Kent on 1841 and 1851 UK census, married Martha Lee B 1808c Seal, Kent. No proof for either of these births and no proof of marriage. I don't have parents for Charles yet, Martha's parents, Jonathon Lee, b 1788 Seal, Kent and Martha Mitchell, 1787, Sevenoaks, Kent. Charles and Martha had 7 children all born in Sevenoaks, Kent. Eliza b 1833, William b 1837, Thomas b 1839, Mary Ann b 1840, Elizabeth b 1841, Esther b 1847, and Charles b 1849. I have good information on most children except MaryAnn, and Esther. Charles and Martha migrated to Australia in 1852 aboard the Helen, with all children except Mary Ann and Esther.

One bit of information that may or may not be useful is I found a George Maynard who married a Jane Lee on 14 August 1836 Sevenoaks, Kent. Could this be brothers married sisters?

Hope someone can shed some light for me.

Hi Dizzi,

Thanks for looking. I don't think this Esther is mine, mine was definately born in Sevenoaks, and i suspect died as well, given that Charles and Martha bought all their children to Oz. My main brickwall is Charles Maynard senior, i am absolutely stuck with him, and a major reason why i have spent the last 3 years saving enough to go to Kent to try to track him down. Thanks anyway for taking the time to have a look for me, and i hope i get the chance to meet up with you when i get there.
